Eivind Gullberg Jensen and Vadim Repin in conversation with Sarah Willis (16 min.)
The conductor Eivind Gullberg Jensen made his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker in October 2010. The year before, he had been appointed chief conductor of the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover. The programme included Jean Sibelius’ First Symphony, to which Jensen feels connected not least by his Nordic heritage. The second work of the evening was Sofia Gubaidulina’s fascinating Violin Concerto Offertorium, a work dedicated to Gidon Kremer, which thematically refers to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Musical Offering. performed with the Philharmoniker by the Russian violinist Vadim Repin. In this recording, the Philharmoniker horn player Sarah Willis talks with the concert’s two guest artists about the special features of the compositions, about the religious moment in Gubaidulina and the music of Sibelius, which seems to call up impressions of landscapes.
