Sir Simon Rattle and Simon Halsey talk about Stravinsky and Rachmaninov
Simon Rattle conducts Stravinsky and Rachmaninov
In the anxious years before the First World War, many composers sought a foothold in the past and tradition – while others pounced on the promise of the 20th century. With its emotional warmth, Rachmaninov’s The Bells belongs to the former category, while Stravinksky’s Le Sacre du printemps in its day pushed the boundaries of classical music. Simon Rattle conducts the works in an exciting juxtaposition.
