Sir Simon Rattle talks about Schumann’s symphonies (11 min.)

The performance of all the Schumann symphonies was a core project of the Berliner Philharmoniker and their principal conductor in 2013. In this introduction, Simon Rattle speaks about the four works and why he thinks it’s wrong to interpret them in the style of Brahms or even Wagner – while Rattle himself even hears more of a “manic-depressive” Mendelssohn shining through in this music. In addition, he explains why he intends never again to conduct Schumann’s Fourth Symphony in the established late version.
