Simon Rattle conducts Ligeti, Zimmermann and Martinů
György Ligeti was inspired by the Catholic mass for the dead to write one of the great choral works of the 20th century. Both his Requiem and his orchestral work Apparitions, conducted here by Sir Simon Rattle, make use of an exciting tonal language. Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Musique pour les soupers du Roi Ubu and Bohuslav Martinů’s Viola Concerto (soloist: Amihai Grosz) also make covert reference to requiem settings by other composers.
