As Artist in Residence, Tabea Zimmermann has a double role in this concert: together with Noah Bendix-Balgley, 1st concertmaster of the Berliner Philharmoniker, she performs as a soloist in Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante, a joyful work whose virtuosic dialogue between viola and violin captivates the listener. She also leads the scholarship holders of the Karajan Academy from the viola section in Johannes Brahms’s Second Serenade and Two Pieces for String Octet by Dmitri Shostakovich.

“When I think of Brahms, I think of natural landscapes, mountains and beautiful panoramas, of this incredible grandeur,” says Yefim Bronfman, who has been one of the piano world’s elite for many years. He performs the composer’s monumental First Piano Concerto. Brahms actually wanted to write his First Symphony instead of the concerto. But it took another two decades before he actually succeeded. It is conducted here by the Philharmoniker’s honorary conductor Daniel Barenboim.

Solène Kermarrec: a portrait

Solène Kermarrec actually wanted to learn the double bass. But at the music school in her home town of Brest, the five-year-old was advised to start with the smaller cello – changing was then never an option for her. After studying in Paris, Budapest and Berlin, the cellist found her first position in an orchestra with the Berliner Philharmoniker at the age of 23 – and at the same time a home, as she says. In this film portrait, Solène Kermarrec also reveals why she prefers to play in a group rather than alone, how different cellists’s ideas of sound can be, and what her second great passion is besides music.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin makes his debut with Berlioz and Prokofiev
It was somewhat of a sensation when in 2010 it was announced that the then just 35-year-old Yannick Nézet-Séguin was to be the next music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Rachmaninov's late-Romantic Second Symphony is filled with the wistful melancholy typical of the composer. Today it is one of the Russian composer’s most popular works, and the symphony also has a special significance for Kirill Petrenko: having chosen the Second for his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2006, he conducted it again 15 years later as the orchestra’s chief conductor. Mariss Jansons conducts Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony
Mariss Jansons is one of the greatest Shostakovich conductors. His June 1992 performance of the Seventh Symphony documented here was only the second time the Berliner Philharmoniker had tackled this work. Shostakovich wrote the symphony in Leningrad in 1941 while it was under siege. Although it was officially interpreted as a celebration of Soviet fighting power, the work carries an unmistakable humanist message condemning war and violence.
